Fluoridation Turns 75 in 2020!
Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the first city in the world to fluoridate its water in 1945. The story behind this wildly successful public health initiative is an uplifting reminder of what’s possible. Check out these summaries from the NIH and CDC. While there is still work to be done (according to a 2014 study, about 25% of Americans on public water systems still did not have access to fluoridated water), we should widely promote the anniversary of this critical public health win. The American Fluoridation Society has released some graphics and a fact sheet to help you get the word out. This kind of promotion can remind folks what public health does for them (or could do for them). Access their resources here.

Capacity Assessment Data Byte: On Which Core Functions do LPHAS Spend the Most?
Understanding which capabilities and services are the most resource intensive is a key part of envisioning the public health system we need. Currently, organizational competencies comprise about 20% of LPHA spending across the 12 foundational capabilities and services. Within that category, financial management, contract and procurement services, and facilities management take up about 40% of spending. This gives us a rough idea of just how much administrative support other core and additional programs require. We will be featuring more data bytes from the capacity assessment (aka the cost assessment) in 2020 newsletters, so stay tuned.
